Story of the week

Every week we share a story from our class that gets shared on the class blog. In our class we do free choice writing every week as we all are authors. Every week a story makes it to the class blog.

How The Kiwi Lost Its Feather

Author- Sadaw

Year 5 Room 5

Once upon a time, there lived a healthy family.

They had a farm at the side of their house and a forest nearby.

They didn’t know why people kept entering the forest.

Then one day, they figured out the answer…

While they were sitting at the dining table,

the father saw the word, “Kiwi” on the box.

He was confused at first, so he researched

and found out the answer. “The Kiwi is a bird!”

he exclaimed with delight.

He shared his discovery to his family and

they got excited just as he did.

Next week, they all went out to the forest

and tried finding a kiwi at night. Soon after,

they heard a rustle in the distance.

The father ran as fast as he could,

and he… caught a kiwi! The kiwi looked frightened,

but the father realized he did bring some worms!

So the kiwi munched on the juicy worm and,

finally, she felt safe around the father.

After that, the father named the kiwi “Maple.”

Maple had a silky gold colour at the side of her beak.

The family knew they couldn’t keep Maple so they let her go.

They felt upset, but they knew it was the right thing to do.

While they were walking away, the younger sister spotted a feather.

She realized that the feather looked like Maple’s feather,

so she took it to her family.

The feather became their best taonga

because it reminded them about their adorable kiwi bird!

At the beginning of the year we brainstormed what learn create share looks like, sounds like and feels like and now we are revisiting this term.

Look at the fantastic posters we have created to visualise what learn create share looks like.

Mathematicians at work!

In our class we have been doing a quarter of an hour hands on maths and we just simply love it. We love it because we get to use a variety of maths equipment and get involved in solving math sums and word problems using any equipment we want from the maths centre in our class.

Slogan Art

In our class we have been learning about New Zealand protests and we learnt about the kind of things that make protests effective and powerful. One of the things we found out was great slogans that convey powerful messages.

This week we have created an art piece and written a slogan on our designed background.

Here are some photos-

This is Drevyn working on creating his slogan art.
